Process Operational Fundamentals Series Using Process Simulators - Webinar
4/23/2021

Event Description
Process Operational Fundamentals Series Using Process Simulators
This Course Consists of Two Webinar Sessions to be Held on
Friday, April 23, 2021 - 9:00-11:30am and 1:00-3:30pm

This training event is open to Licensed and Unlicensed Wastewater Operators, Professional Engineers, Supervisors, Managers, and all others interested in the topic.  There are two webinar sessions to the training:  9:00-11:30am and 1:00-3:30pm.  You have the option to register for both webinar sessions, or for only one webinar session.  Each webinar session has been approved by the PA DEP for 1.0 conference contact hour for PA licensed wastewater operators.  Continuing education transcripts for others participating in the live class time will be provided by email.

Session 1 - Activated Sludge Fundamentals and Secondary Clarifier Operation Using State Point Analysis
This webinar will present the fundamentals of activated sludge and secondary clarifier operation with a focus on the development and use of State Point Analysis to define secondary clarifier capacity and RAS rates.  Activated sludge concepts including F/M ratio, Solids Retention Time (SRT) and Aerobic SRT will be presented and illustrated using simulator demonstrations.  Secondary clarifier operating criteria including Surface Overflow Rate, Solids Loading Rate and SVI will be presented as a precursor to discussing the background and use of State Point Analysis (SPA) techniques for the operation and troubleshooting of secondary clarifiers.  Steady state and dynamic simulators will be presented to illustrate secondary clarifier operating concepts and the SPA approach.  Actual plant operating examples will also be included to demonstrate the use of the techniques presented.

Session 2 - Operation of Activated Sludge Nitrification Systems
This webinar will define the key process parameters and common limiting factors related to operation and troubleshooting of the nitrification process.   The major concepts covered include; defining the solids retention time (SRT) and mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentration needed to nitrify as well as how wastewater temperature, dissolved oxygen, alkalinity and pH impact process performance.  Examples of actual plant operation with data in addition to example simulations will be provided.

Instructor
Paul Dombrowski has more than 30 years of professional experience and is currently the Chief Technologist with Woodard & Curran. He has led the evaluation and design of numerous plant upgrades many that that focus on nutrient removal.  Paul has contributed to numerous journal articles and textbooks including many recent WEF Manuals of Practice. In recognition to his contributions to wastewater design and operations, Paul has received the NEWEA Peloquin and Sawyer Awards, the EPA Region 1 Trainer Award, the WEF Morgan Operational Solutions Medal, the WEF Furhman Medal and has been recognized as a WEF Fellow.  He is a professional engineer, a board-certified environmental engineer and certified wastewater operator.  Paul has also served as the Operations Challenge Process Control Event Coordinator for NEWEA from 2011 through 2018 and currently serves in that role with the WEF Operations Challenge Event that is held at WEFTEC each year

Webinar Fees:  $45 for both sessions; or $25 for only one session.

Webinar Software
PWEA utilizes the AnyMeeting webinar platform.  A webinar participant will need to review the AnyMeeting system requirements (https://kb.intermedia.net/Article/38962) prior to the webinar day to ensure smooth viewing. A few days prior to the webinar date, you will receive a webinar invitation email from the webinar software. The webinar link is specific for your use only, so do not share the link with anyone else - each registrant receives a unique link.  If the registrant's computer does not contain a microphone, a phone number and an access code will also be provided in order to hear and communicate with the webinar instructor by phone while viewing PowerPoint slides on their computer monitor.  Each webinar is scheduled to take 2 to 2 1/2 hours.

Continuing Education Transcripts
When you participate in both live webinar sessions, you will receive 2.0 PA DEP wastewater contact hours; 1.0 contact hour if only registering for one of the two webinar sessions.  Continuing education credit for individuals other than Pennsylvania operators is 2.5 hours per webinar session, with a total of 5.0 hours for both webinar sessions.  In order to receive an attendance transcript and/or PA DEP wastewater operator contact hour(s), participation in the entire length of each webinar session is required.  Participation will be tracked by the webinar software and the instructor will be asking questions requiring answers be submitted using the chat function.

Cancellation Policy
If you are unable to participate in the live webinar session(s) on the scheduled date, PWEA has the following refund policy for cancellations:
  • A 75% refund if cancellation is received in writing (email or fax) three or more business days prior to the live webinar date.
  • No refund if cancellation is received in writing (email or fax) less than three business days prior to the live webinar date.
